Artist Statement

"Originating externally, and then flowing through me, each piece captures a moment and the moment, seemingly capturing the past, the present and leading the way to the future."

Creative imagining, intuition and intent flow from heart to mind to hands as I introduce diverse strands fibre and ribbons of fabric to a river of silk. Ideas for a piece originate in my life experiences, journeys actual and imagined. Seeds of a concept arise from memories, rich with emotions and mental thoughts. Inspiration for a piece can quickly arise out of an aspect of nature, or as easily from the simple desire to know a fibre or understand a colour more intimately.

In the process of laying out the fibres, the project begins, quickly taking on a life of its own. Laying fine, baby-soft Merino wool onto silk fabric and blending in silk fibre adds lustre and softness. Hand-dyeing silk fabric and hand-spun silken yarns with wild silk fibres or sari silk, I joyously play to create an extravaganza of colour and texture.

Watching fibres and colours meet, embrace and become one is a thrilling experience as they meld to form a wild and unexpected beauty. Allowing the felting process to happen organically ensures an ethereal outcome: a dramatic freeform textural landscape where fibres and fabrics leap from the surface. It is amazing to observe how a river of connectedness always runs through each piece. As I work, I feel a strong bond to my ancestors of the Pontic-Caspian steppe of eastern Europe, where feltmaking is an ancient tradition. Originating externally, and then flowing through me, each piece captures a moment and the moment, seemingly capturing the past, the present and leading the way to the future.

Giving every idea the time it needs to gestate and grow, nurturing a pocketful of ‘snippets’ until they ultimately reveal themselves as a finished, whole piece, is nothing less than wondrous. Every creation, be it a piece of clothing, jewelry or home décor, is unique, an original beyond duplication!
